Ambassador Sorensen visits John Paul II Youth Centre in Sarajevo

The Head of the EU Delegation/European Union Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, visited the John Paul II Youth Centre in Sarajevo on Thursday 4 July. The Ambassador met with the Head of the Centre, Dr. Simo Maršić who guided him through the Centre, the construction of which is yet to be finalised.

Dr. Marsic informed Ambassador Sorensen on the Centre’s needs, especially those concerning the finalisation of its construction, on the activities undertaken by the Centre and its future projects, focusing on the next year’s international meeting for the celebration of “Sarajevo 2014: European Bridges of Culture”

Ambassador Sorensen commended the Centre for the work it has done over the past years, especially in educating young people from different cultural and socio-economic background and as a place of intercultural exchange. Ambassador Sorensen also underlined that the European Union is paying close attention to freedom of thought, conscience and religion in BiH, and opposing discrimination including on religious grounds.

Since 2004, the Centre has provided education to over 5000 young persons from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. It is a place of intercultural exchange with numerous projects. The Youth Centre offers possibilities for young people to engage in volunteering, sports and culture and thereby promote interreligious/intercultural dialogue, non-discrimination and equality.
