Ambassador Sorensen celebrates Olympic spirit with BiH’s Sochi team and EYOF 2017

The Head of EU Delegation in BiH and EU Special Representative, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, attended on Saturday, 1 February 2014, at Jahorina mountain, the official promotion of the BiH Olympic team for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 and presentation of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) 2017.

On the occasion, a symbolic Olympic torch was lit by Zana Novakovic, member of BiH Sochi Olympic team and bearer of the BiH flag at the opening ceremony in Sochi, and Sanda Dubravcic-Simunic, former Yugoslavian ice skater, marking the 30th anniversary of the Sarajevo Winter Olympics. Ms. Dubravcic-Simunic was the person who lit the Olympic torch at the Sarajevo Olympics in 1984.

Speaking at the presentation of the EYOF 2017, Ambassador Sorensen said:

“Sport is not only important as a competition but also as economic activity that creates jobs and promotes tourism. In that sense, I hope that EYOF 2017 will once again shine Olympic light on Sarajevo and East Sarajevo and the EU is here to help you and support you in the process of the preparation of this important event”.

Ambassador Sorensen also wished all the best to the BiH Olympic team that will compete at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

EYOF 2017 will be organized by the cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo and the EU is supporting this youth Olympic competition through its technical assistance.
