Land disputes to be resolved faster – Sorensen

Better land administration – including faster resolution of land disputes and reducing inconsistencies in land books and cadastres – is on the way in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) thanks to a one million Euro (1.96 million KM) investment from the European Commission’s Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA) fund for 2007, Head of Delegation/European Union Special Representative Ambassador Peter Sorensen said today in Sarajevo.

A further 1.3 million Euro (2.54 million KM) is identified from the IPA fund for 2008 for Phase 2 of the project that will create air picturing.

He was speaking at the launch of a new network of permanent Global Positioning System stations. The project has been implemented by Leica Geosystems in partnership with the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs, the Administration for Geodetic and Property Affairs of the Federation of BiH, the Authority for Geodetic and Property Affairs of Republika Srpska and the Government of the Brèko District.

Ambassador Sorensen said:

“This new network will make a real difference for citizens, as in the future land disputes will be resolved faster, issuing of documents related to land ownership will be more efficient and inconsistencies in land registers will be eliminated.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina will have the capacity to collect and produce reliable data useful for statistics, in particular economic and agricultural statistics in line with EU standards.

“In addition, Bosnia and Herzegovina will now be able to integrate into the existing European Global Navigation Satellite Systems.”

“I am pleased that such good results have been achieved through excellent cooperation between the responsible authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Work in this area will be continuing with a further 1.3 million Euro project financed by the EU, which will create air picturing and ortphoto maps to give an accurate overview of the whole country.”
