OHR’s Statement at the International Agencies’ Joint Press Conference in Mostar

Christian Schwarz-Schilling on
International Day of the Disappeared

Ever since he became involved in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schwarz-Schilling has campaigned for the
rights of the victims of the war, both dead and living. Over the years, he has
frequently met with relatives of the missing; he has listened to their stories;
and he has been moved by their plight. On International Day of the Disappeared,
he has the following message:

“More than
a decade after the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, thousands of people
are still waiting for news of loved ones who went missing. For them, the pain of
conflict has not gone. While the grief will not necessarily diminish and the
victims should never be forgotten, it is our collective duty to seek out and
find the remains of the dead, to recover and identify the bodies and to
establish how they died. This painstaking process is ongoing and we are
gradually discovering the fate of the many war dead as, sadly, their graves are
being discovered every month. On International Day of the Disappeared, our
thoughts must be with the families and friends of the missing.”
