Empowering Trust and Cohesion in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Communities

Positive stories of building trust and cohesion can be found in many communities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where different actors lead by example and take concrete steps towards bringing people together and strengthening sustainable peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These positive examples can serve as inspiration to other communities and political action on higher levels of authority, however, in BiH’s public discourse they remain unnoticed and even drowned out by negative narratives.

The European Union (EU) funded project “Empowering Trust and Cohesion in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Communities” – a joint endeavour of the EU, United Nations (UN), Organization for Security and Co-operation (OSCE) and Council of Europe (CoE) – aims to serve as a place of encounter and collective action. Implemented in 23 communities* and in close cooperation with local authorities, civil society organizations, individuals as “champions of peace”, the media, and other social actors, the project aims to strengthen and promote and environment more conducive to genuine reconciliation, thus contributing to improved trust and cohesion within and between communities.

The project includes a variety of activities and engagement of diverse social actors:

  • cooperation with local authorities and organization of community dialogues within and between communities, as a platform for greater civic participation and interaction;
  • investments in local infrastructure and support to civil society organizations in implementation of initiatives that build and strengthen trust and cohesion between different groups;
  • support to local media in the mission of amplifying positive stories and countering divisive narratives.

Building trust and cohesion is an ongoing process, at times fragile and hard to accomplish and yet always rewarding. Through the “Empowering Trust and Cohesion in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Communities” project, we are coming together on all levels – from local communities to the international community – fuelled by renewed hope and energy, united in amplifying positive stories and creating alternative narratives.
