Get engaged in changes, build your own future

A group of high school students from Kalesija together with their teachers visited the EU Delegation in Sarajevo on 16 February to learn more about the European Union and its presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Welcoming the students, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Khaldoun Sinno said: ”We believe that your future is in the European Union. You are not only surrounded by EU countries but fundamentally you are part of the EU.” Sinno encouraged them to find out more information about the EU youth exchange programmes, such as ERASMUS+, which is a great opportunity to travel to other countries, to study there and get new experiences. “We count on you as young citizens of this country. Study hard and get engaged in changes” added Sinno.

The students wanted to know where Bosnia and Herzegovina stands in the context of the EU integration process. They also wanted to know more about the rule of law, how it is implemented and whether there is a mechanism to influence politicians to accelerate the integration process. Youngsters said they are concerned about their future but they are also prepared to change things.

As 2018 is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, this was one of the topics of the discussion. The students were delighted to present handicrafts they brought with them from Kalesija as part of their cultural heritage as well as pieces of art which they produced.

They also watched the film “Cultural Heritage – the Key to Our Future, produced by the EU Info Centre, featuring BiH cultural heritage monuments, some of which they visited following the presentation.

In the past six months, the EU Info Centre and Info Points staff visited or hosted almost 40 primary and secondary schools throughout BiH and held presentations for students on EUIC activities and the EU presence in the country.
