EU Info Centre hosted exhibition “Reconciliation through History Education’’

The exhibition ‘’Reconciliation through History Education’’ echoing the press coverage during the period bounded by the Sarajevo assassination and the July crisis on the brink of World War I was opened at the EU Info Centre in Sarajevo on 28 January 2016.

The exhibition is based on the research of the newspapers published within the territory of today’s 13 countries and was created within the EU funded project “Reconciliation through History Education”. The project is implemented by the National and University Library of Republika Srpska and the Agency for Cooperation, Education and Development (ACED).

“We all know the Latin proverb ‘Historia est magistra vitae’ and we like to believe that by teaching and learning history we can also learn a lesson and avoid to repeat mistakes,” said Massimo Mina, Head of Operations Section for Social Development, Civil Society and Cross-Border Cooperation in the EU Delegation to BiH. “That’s why it is important to have a full understanding of the history of a nation which often makes it possible to build a democratic country whose citizens are aware of their difficult history and complicated relations within their own and with other countries,” Mina added.

“With the aim of a peaceful and stable society, the exhibition is trying to promote reconciliation and trust building in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said the Project Coordinator Svjetlana Marković. “While identifying the significance of studying history, the project encourages development of critical thinking and culture of dialogue in the context of marking of historical events in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Marković concluded.

The project promotes tolerance, non-violent conflict resolution, respect and collaboration between the groups representing different views by collecting and presenting historical material.

In addition to the exhibition, which was presented in 13 cities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, the project also published several publications, filmed a documentary and organised public debates on reconciliation.

The project “Reconciliation through History Education” is one of many activities financed within the Sarajevo 2014 Programme in the amount of 2 million euro designed to help completing the process of reconciliation in the Western Balkans conveying European values of reconciliation, tolerance and peace.
