EU Floods Recovery Programme brings rehabilitation works in Tuzla to completion

The EU Floods Recovery Programme marked the completion of its rehabilitation works in Tuzla city area with a ceremonial opening of the reconstructed bridge in Dokanj settlement on 10 November 2015.

Tuzla was among 24 local communities most affected by the May 2014 floods. The Programme invested over 1.4 million Euro into the rehabilitation of the city area.

The Programme activities in Tuzla included rehabilitation of 242 houses for some 850 people; 7 schools that cater to more than 3,200 students; and 3 bridges that connect over 100 families to the main road infrastructure and provide access to a local graveyard and a church. Almost 15 percent of the assistance was allocated to support 5 small and medium enterprises and 28 commercial agricultural producers and agricultural holdings to re-establish production and retain and create over 100 jobs.

Our goal in Tuzla, as in all the other flood affected parts of BiH, is to help restore normal living conditions, reaching out in particular to those deemed most vulnerable,” said EU Floods Recovery Programme Manager Edis Arifagić.

Tuzla City Mayor Jasmin Imamović said: “The assistance we received through the EU Floods Recovery Programme was of great importance for the city and its effects were two fold. Firstly the Programme targeted those who needed help the most, it supported our economy and it helped improved learning conditions for the children. Secondly, the EU Programme and its activities helped galvanise support from other institutions which was much needed in the aftermath of the floods.

The EU Floods Recovery Programme worth 43.52 million Euro is funded by the EU and implemented by the UNDP, UNICEF and IOM.
