Thanks to EU support, construction began on future homes for Roma families in Gorica settlement

With the help of the European Union and the Municipality Centar Sarajevo, four residential units for Roma families will be constructed in Gorica settlement in Sarajevo. Families that will live here will be the beneficiaries of housing units, while Municipality Centar will be the owner.

A stone for construction of the two foundations for two housing units each for four Roma families was laid at the ceremony in Sarajevo on 15 September 2015.

Roma representative, Dervo Sejdić, said that fifteen years ago, Roma from Gorica settlement did not believe that they will continue to live here, and now they will be able to live in adequate housing conditions.

The EU funded the construction within the project “ROMA ACTION” with the aims of supporting the implementation of Roma action plans in BiH, contributing towards the improvement of living condition and supporting socio-economic inclusion of Roma in BiH through housing, socio-economic measures with proactive participation of local authorities and other stakeholders.

The project is financed by the European Union through IPA 2011 in the amount of €2.5 million and co-funded by local authorities in the amount of €545.037. In total, 152 housing units will be (re)constructed for the Roma families within the project. The Project is implemented by Hilfswerk Austria International, in partnership with Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e.V (ASB) and Kali Sara – RIC Association.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the EU Delegation to BiH, BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees, Hilfswerk Austria International, ASB as well as Roma representative, Mr. Dervo Sejdić.
