Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton on the transfer of Ratko Mladic to ICTY in The Hague

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today: “I welcome the transfer of Ratko Mladić to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. This is an important moment for reconciliation in the region and for international justice. Our thoughts and sympathies are with those who suffered and lost loved ones during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, particularly in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The trial before the ICTY of Mr Mladić, accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and violation of the laws and customs of war, will contribute to revealing the truth and will fulfil a duty to provide justice for the victims and their families.“
