Ambassador Wigemark meets “Let’s Do It!” eco-movement activists on European Climate Diplomacy Day 17 June

Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, met today with the activists of global ecological movement “Let’s Do It!” in BiH, Mr. Junuz Elkaz and Ms. Aida Šakić, on the occasion of European Climate Diplomacy Day 17 June.

“Let’s Do It!” is the largest ecological voluntary movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina that organizes annual country-wide actions of illegal garbage dump sites removal and reforestations of forest and public spaces. EUD/EUSR supported these actions in previous years.

Mr. Elkaz and Ms. Šakić familiarized Ambassador Wigemark with the “Let’s Do It!” upcoming activities with particular emphasis on reforestation actions and education campaigns on climate changes. They agreed that in light of last year’s disastrous floods deforestation poses a significant issue as trees are natural barriers to landslides.

Ambassador Wigemark handed over 70 t-shirts to the “Let’s Do It!” activists as a donation for their upcoming ecological activities.

Later on in the day, Ambassador Wigemark, together with the Ambassadors of Germany and France, H.E. Christian Hellbach and H.E. Claire Bodonyi, opened an exhibition of artworks by the students of the elementary school ‘Musa Cazim Catic’ on the topics of climate change and environmental protection.

On 17 June 2015, European embassies around the world mark the second Climate Diplomacy Day, promoting a common worldwide understanding of the need for action to mitigate climate change. Following last year’s successful collaboration between Germany, France and the United Kingdom, with joint climate diplomacy events organized in over 30 countries, this year’s Climate Diplomacy Day will be an even broader, European Union effort.
