Statement of the EUD/EUSR and EU Heads of Missions in BiH on the occasion of European Climate Diplomacy Day, 17 June 2015

In the European Union and around the world, we mark European Climate Diplomacy Day today, the second since its inauguration by the UK and Germany in 2014.

2015 is a decisive year for international climate negotiations. Our aim is to continue the commitment to limit the rise in global temperature to below 2°C compared to the temperature in the pre-industrial period, by securing a fair, ambitious and legally binding international agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to take place at the end of the year at the Conference of Parties in Paris. Throughout 2015 other relevant multilateral processes are underway, together seeking to pave the way for climate resilient, sustainable development worldwide.

All countries are expected to put forward their contributions well in advance of the Paris Conference to allow for the design of and agreement on a robust and dynamic plan that responds to today’s reality and is valid for the future.

On the occasion of European Climate Diplomacy Day, we emphasise that the EU is fully committed to doing its part and it counts on the continued cooperation and collaboration of all its international partners, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, to reach a successful outcome at the Paris Conference. This is a historic opportunity we cannot miss!

The EU is on track to deliver our commitment of at least 40% emissions reduction by 2030. In this context we also strongly encourage the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to swiftly adopt the country’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) and submit it to the Convention as soon as possible, before the deadline of 31 October 2015.
