Warmer classrooms for 230 pupils of elementary school “Novak Pivašević” in Čelinac

Elementary school “Novak Pivašević” in Stara Dubrava, Čelinac Municipality, is one of the 74 educational institutions rehabilitated to date as part of the EU Floods Recovery Programme, which marked today the celebratory completion of school’s rehabilitation.

Thanks to an EU investment of 188,583 EUR for introduction of energy efficiency measures which financed joinery replacement and construction of a new façade, 230 pupils will have warmer classrooms as of next winter.

The EU also financed the acquisition of furniture, didactic and laboratory equipment as well as sports equipment worth 25,616 EUR.

The school principal Drago Railić thanked the EU for the school’s rehabilitation and UNDP and UNICEF for swift completion of the project. “Today, when we mark the official completion of the rehabilitation works on the school building, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to the institutions and individuals who have lent us a helping hand this in time of need. Through its EU Floods Recovery Programme, the European Union provided generous financial support for rehabilitation of the school building,” said Director Railić. “Now the school is in good condition, and it will be much easier to conduct classes,” added the principal.

The EU Floods Recovery Programme was launched to restore normal living conditions in local communities and ensure that the assistance reaches the most vulnerable ones in the aftermath of floods in May 2014. Financial aid is used for rehabilitation of the buildings for public services, infrastructure, housing units for the most vulnerable people and for socio-economic recovery of local communities.

The value of the overall Programme is 43.52 million, out of which 42.24 million is provided by the European Union. This assistance is a part of the funds that the European Union pledged at the donor conference in Brussels in July 2014.

The Programme is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
