Statement by Peter Sorensen at the Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the International Monitoring Operation of the Population and Housing Census in BiH

A Memorandum of Understanding between the European Commission, the Council of Europe and the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the International Monitoring Operation of the Population and Housing Census in BiH was signed today in the Building of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EUSR Ambassador Peter Sorensen said at this occasion:

“The completion of a census is one of the most important activities in the field of a country’s official statistics; it gives valuable data on demographic structure and the main socio-economic features of the population. Also, the country will have updated data on the number and structure of the dwellings as well as data on living conditions of the population. Without this data, the authorities cannot plan public services, and foreign investors find it hard to engage with the country and make investments. The census itself is a major exercise and requires trained and capable staff, significant funds and moreover strong management of all activities and time. We are looking forward to supporting the work of the BiH authorities”.
