Head of EU Delegation in BiH/EU Special Representative Sorensen meets NATO Secretary General Rasmussen

The Head of the EU Delegation/EUSR, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, met with the NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in Sarajevo to discuss the Euro-Atlantic integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ambassador Sorensen informed the NATO Secretary General, who visited Sarajevo on Thursday, 7 February 2013, about the EU’s ongoing work to promote equal rights in the country’s electoral system. Principally this involves implementation of the judgment in the case ‘Sejdic and Finci’.

“Without implementation of the judgment, the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU will not be able to come fully into force. Bosnia and Herzegovina would also remain in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights. The most important element now is the engagement of the local political forces who have the leading role. No agreement on this matter would mean stagnation in EU integration”, Ambassador Sorensen stated.

Secretary General Rasmussen stressed that the NATO fully supports BiH aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration.
