Youth quiz and art exhibition to celebrate Europe Day in Zenica

Within the programme organized by the EU Delegation/EUSR to mark Europe Day in BiH, the city of Zenica played host to a quiz for elementary school pupils and an open-air art exhibition authored by young artists.

Head of EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, together with the Mayor of Zenica, Husein Smajlovic, attended the quiz competition designed to test knowledge of pupils from three elementary schools in Zenica on people and places in the EU. Ambassador Sorensen declared the winning team – primary school ‘Mesa Selimovic’. They will progress to semi-finals to be held in Banja Luka.

“I know there can be only one winner but trust me whatever the jury will come up with – you are all winners today. You are the winners because of the courage to participate in the quiz, impressive knowledge of the European Union you showed today and your positive and competition spirit”, said Ambassador Sorensen while awarding the winning team.

Following the quiz completion, Ambassador Sorensen, together with  Mayor Smajlovic and the Directorate for European Integration Director, Nevenka Savic, opened the exhibition “EU in Art” at the Alija Izetbegovic square. The exhibition  gathered works of more than 60 young artists from Sarajevo, Brcko, Celinac, Maoca, Visoko, Bijeljina, Bihac, Banja Luka, Gradiska, Visegrad and Tuzla. The artists were asked to portray the wider and deeper community of the EU envisaged by Robert Schuman, and the role of citizens within that community and what does that mean for BiH.

While awarding the winners of the competition – Damir Zirojevic, first place, Selma Selman, second place and Azra Uzejrovic, third place – Ambassador Sorensen said: “The European Union strongly supports the importance of arts and culture and provides substantial financial support to cultural activities. Arts and culture is interwined with all forms of our activity and daily life and although  it gives an individual vision, it is also a universal language for the entire world.”

The event was concluded by the performance of pupils from the Zenica Music School and majorettes from Kiseljak.
