Protocol between Prosecutors’ Offices aims to tackle impunity in war crimes

A Protocol was signed between the Prosecutors’ Offices of BiH and Croatia on Co-operation in Prosecution of War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and Genocide, on 3 June. The Protocol was signed on the basis of the existing bilateral Agreement on Co-operation in Civil and Criminal Matters.

The aim of the protocol is to allow the exchange of information and evidence in war crimes cases. This will allow cases to be prosecuted that might otherwise be prevented, for example, due to extradition arrangements. Thus, it is part of the overall effort to reduce impunity for war crimes.

Ambassador Peter Sorensen, the Head of EU Delegation to BiH/EUSR, Goran Salihovic, the BiH Chief Prosecutor and Mladen Bajic, the Chief Prosecutor of Croatia participated in the ceremony. “Processing war crimes cases in the Western Balkans remains amongst the key regional priorities in the context of the European integration process.

Truth and reconciliation in the region can only be consolidated by guaranteeing justice, for the victims, their families and more broadly for all affected communities.” said Ambassador Sorensen.
