EU Delegation/EUSR and U.S. Embassy Joint Statement on Resolving the Political Stalemate in the Federation

The responsibility for resolving the political stalemate in the Federation lies with local leaders. At their request, we have attempted in recent weeks to facilitate dialogue among the parties on a reshuffling of the Federation government. However, we now have no option but to discontinue our efforts to assist in restructuring the Federation government.

There initially was some progress but, in the end, we found insufficient willingness to compromise on all sides. All parties in the Federation parliament and executive bear a share of the blame in a process that has gone on far too long. We call on President Budimir not to block or delay this process and to demonstrate leadership that will lead to a solution consistent with basic rules of parliamentary democracy. In turn, the two HDZs must accept that President Budimir will complete his term if he does so.

It is time for leaders in the Federation government and parliament to focus on the real issues that will lead to completion of economic and social reforms agreed with the IMF, promote economic growth and development, create a positive climate for business, and enhance citizens’ welfare.
