Video message to Western Balkans by EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle

On the first July Croatia will become a new Member State of the European Union. Croatia’s entry provides fresh evidence of the transformative power of the European Union’s enlargement policy: torn by conflict only two decades ago, the country is now a stable democracy, capable of taking on the obligations of European Union membership and up to European Union standards.

This is a powerful signal for all of you in the region: you can do it too when you make the necessary efforts.

Croatia’s accession reaffirms that the perspective of European integration remains open to all countries in the region that show the necessary political will to implement political and economic reforms and prove their respect for European values such as the rule of law, democratic principles and human rights. The opportunities are there but moving ahead in the European Union accession process depends in the first place on the real progress achieved on all these issues on the ground. There are no shortcuts to take or magic formulas to use. Croatia’s accession proves that the European Union respects its commitments: membership can become a reality once the conditions have been met.

As Croatia enters the European Union, this does not mean it is leaving the region.

On the contrary, the European Union is getting closer to you – even physically: almost all of the countries of the Western Balkans are going to share a border with the European Union. You will find yourselves literally embraced by the single market, which offers more opportunities for investment and trade to local businesses. Making use of these opportunities should become a priority for all the governments in the region, for the benefit of the citizens.

The European Union was built on the ashes left by the Second World War. Reconciliation and cooperation among former rivals became the basis for many decades of peace, stability and prosperity. The same perspective is now open to the entire Western Balkans region. Croatia’s historic accession brings this perspective a step closer. And we will continue to be ready to support you in taking the next steps to follow Croatia.
